 Powering the Next Semiconductor Revolution

The buzz right now is all about smart technologies and the internet of things (IoT). The rapid evolution of new generation products and services based on smart technologies is not only revolutionizing many industries and business sectors but also the way humans have started interacting – giving rise to smart nations in an increasingly connected and digital world.

A smart nation uses digital technologies to enhance performance and wellbeing, to reduce costs and resource consumption, and to engage more effectively and actively with its citizens. While a smart nation platform is driven mainly by data and analytics, the underlying and enabling technology for the same comprises mainly of sensing, processing and connectivity – all provided by the semiconductor industry. 

Exciting times lie ahead in how the semiconductor industry can catalyse new revolutionary changes in today’s technologies and bring about more interesting consumer experiences. How can the industry ride on this wave in developing innovations and value creation? What kind of challenges and opportunities do smart nations present to leverage these smart technologies?

The SSIA Summit 2015 will be a great platform to gain insight on some of the answers to these questions and more. Leading semiconductor companies, start-ups, investors, industry analysts and leaders will come to share their thoughts in this elite forum. 

The SSIA Summit is Singapore Semiconductor Industry Association’s flagship event where we endeavour to bring our members and colleagues a common platform to share industry visions, trends and thoughts. This annual event has been in the running since SSIA’s inception as MIDAS in 2005 and has captured much interest from local and regional business leaders.

This year’s Summit will be held on 22 Oct 2015 at Marina Bay Sands from 9 – 7pm. The past SSIA Summits typically attracts over 200 professionals from the semiconductor industry, including key executives from fabless design house, wafer fabs, OSATs, EDA companies, academia, government agencies and many other players from various parts of the semiconductor ecosystems.

This year, we are also proud to celebrate our 10th year anniversary with many milstones achieved over the last decade.

Abstract

The semiconductor industry is currently in a state of transition. After enjoying fantastic growth during the personal computing and mobile revolutions, the semiconductor industry is hitting a patch of slow to no growth. This is happening at the very same time the cost advantage from moving to the next smaller process technology node predicted by Moore's Law is no longer there. So what is next?

The next big change to our lives is likely going to come from making everything around us smart. And semiconductors will play an essential role in making this happen. This talk examines how EDA and Semiconductor IP companies will contribute to the development of smart devices for a smarter world.

Singapore's Electronics Industry - Enabling our Smart Nation

Abstract

Today, global challenges such as ageing population, intensifying urban density and sustainability plague nations worldwide. Technologically, we are seeing people, devices and infrastructure being more interconnected resulting in an explosion of dat. Riding on these trends, Singapore launched a Whole-of-Government Initiative to transform our country into a Smart Nation. The Initiative aims to harness technology to create better living and support stronger communities. We believe that the Electronics industry lies at the heart of this Initiative as one of the key enablers to a Smart Nation. This talk examines how our Electronics industry can be transformed to capitalize on the opportunities presented by the Smart Nation Vision and beyond.

The Semiconductor R&D Pipeline for Smart Cities and Homes

Abstract

Smart Cities will use pervasive computing and sensing to enable a better quality of life for their residents. These sensing/computing capabilities are used in the domains of public safety, water and power conservation, pollution reduction, traffic jam elimination and information access. The elements of a Smart home can include power generation and storage, smart thermostats, digital locks, 3D printers and wifi enabled appliances. This talk will focus on the R&D pipeline in the areas of embedded NVM, MEMS, Power Management and RF. The Internet of Things and insatiable mobility bandwidth demands provide a challenge of providing low voltage/low power solutions at very sensitive price points. Flash Memories no longer scale below 40nm so new memory solutions need to be developed. The leading candidates to replace floating gate flash are RRAM and MRAM. Vehicles with Start/Stop, Self Park and other Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are being developed. These features are driving innovation in CMOS mm wave radar, LED/IR lighting and image sensors/cameras. The widespread use of heterogeneous integration techniques like III-V on Silicon and TSV still await some cost breakthroughs. Singapore has a vibrant semiconductor manufacturing sector. The R&D capabilities at the local universities and research institutions in partnership with the semiconductor facilities can enable Singapore to become a world class engine for driving innovation in low power, high bandwidth solutions that drive the Smart City / Smart Home vision.

Realizing the next growth wave for semiconductors - A new approach to enable innovative startups

Abstract

The semiconductor industry has evolved from its early days of startups and spinouts financed by venture capital to an era of specialization associated with the rise of foundries and fabless companies to today's structure characterized by consolidation and dominance by a few leaders in each of the product areas. Looking forward, there is anticipation that a new wave of innovation is upon us associated with key trends in energy, personal health care, autonomous transportation, mobility, and home automation, generally referred to as the Internet of Things (IoT).

To realize these optimistic expectations for meaningful growth, innovation and entrepreneurship generally associated with startups will be even more crucial. However, all of the indicators ranging from IPO's, venture capital investment, and organic industry growth rates strongly suggest that new business models are needed. Taking inspiration from the robust incubation and acquisition activities in software, pharmaceuticals and biotech, a new approach to assist startups pursuing solutions in silicon has been launched. Its unique focus is on the difficult problems entrepreneurs and new companies encounter when attempting to innovate in semiconductors and MEMs... namely the challenge of raising sufficient funding and obtaining the appropriate design, prototyping, and test capabilities to move from concept to working prototypes.

In this context, a new early-stage startup incubator called Silicon Catalyst has been launched in Silicon Valley in 2015. The objective is to stimulate a vital and robust startup community by connecting the interests of the industry stakeholders, ranging from systems and product-based companies to the enabling supply chain to a network of mentors experienced in assisting startups, and to investors who are looking for attractive returns and timely graduation and acquisition.

This presentation will describe the key financial and innovation trends of the semiconductor industry, whose advances underpin a broad set of industries that depend on ever more useful and cost-effective electronics. For context, comparisons with the structure and evolution of related industries will be made. Progress in establishing the incubator, screening startups and executing Silicon Catalyst's business model with support from across the semiconductor industry's stakeholders using lean innovation principles will be described. Opportunities for public and private partnerships and global expansion to other high technology regions using this incubation model to accelerate commercialization will also be covered.

Abstract

China is the world's largest semiconductor consumer, and has launched an ambitious government plan to become a leader in the industry by 2020. Indeed, China can leverage a vibrant ecosystem ranging from foundry to fabless, mobile phone ODMs, telecommunication equipment, and internet companies. In the next few years, this means more opportunities for collaboration between multinational companies and China, but also that China may want to create national champions as it has done in other industries. So, exactly what role can China aspire to in each sector (memory, logic foundry, logic fabless)? What could be in China's potentially disruptive moves, and what would be China's challenges? What are the implications for industry players - both Chinese and non-Chinese?

A New Vision for A Collaborative Platform for IoT Design & Manufacturing Enablement

Abstract

Internet of Things (IoT) is the next wave in the evolution of the Internet. With 50 Billion IoT devices predicted by 2020 and over $15 trillion in generated profit over the next 10 years, IoT will have a profound and dominating impact on the high tech industry in general, and the semiconductor and sensor industries in particular. IoT is creating an unprecedented era of design and manufacturing opportunities for small to medium size companies worldwide. However, the existing design and development methodologies and business models pose a major hindrance for small companies.

There are significant opportunities to improve the IoT node design and manufacturing workflows and computing infrastructure through the application of cloud computing technologies. The existing design and manufacturing environments have not changed much over the past two decades and, by and large, have not benefited from technology advances in cloud computing, hardware virtualization, workflow management, collaboration management, and many other technologies commonly used by modern cloud based applications like social networking and eCommerce.
